Visiting Southern New Mexico

Southern New Mexico’s Ski Apache winter recreation area is convenient for day trips from Alamogordo and Ruidoso. The 2016 winter season starts with Party on the Mountain with skiing, boarding, and tubing on slopes and cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the surrounding Sierra Blanca and Buck Mountain forests. Look for Ski Apache to open November 27th or soon after.

After November’s Ruidoso Christmas Jubilee at the Ruidoso Convention Center, the holiday spirit picks up December 5th with the 2016 Christmas in the Park at Schoolhouse Park, and the annual light of the Yule Log. The holiday fun continues with the December 7th Parade of Lights presented by the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Special 2016 events in Ruidoso include the Three Redneck Tenors Christmas Spec-tac-yule-ar at Spence Theater, the Cowboy Christmas Ball hosted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse on December 14th, or Ruidoso Dance Ensemble performing The Nutcracker December 21st and 22nd.

Winter is off-season for UFO events in Roswell making the season an ideal time to visit the Roswell UFO Museum and Research Center to explore the history of New Mexico’s Alien City. This is also the season to enjoy the Roswell Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-2017 season. See the Texas Tenors with RSO on December 15 for the Deep in the Heart of Christmas performance. The 2017 season begins on February 22nd with RSO performing Strauss Tchaikovsky and Berlioz.

The weather is always nice in the caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, an hour south of Artesia. Take your time entering through the Natural Entrance, following guides to the Big Room. Stick around for the evening when thousands of Mexican free-tail bats exit at sunset. Winter hours at Carlsbad Caverns are from 8am to 5pm.

West of Las Cruces over the Rio Grande River, the Southern New Mexico Speedway rev’s up the 2017 season February 28th through March 3rd with the Winter Meltdown. Featuring modifieds, street stocks, legends and super trucks, get ready for the action and excitement. February 28th is practice day with races March 1st through 3rd.
