Located in between Las Cruces and Socorro, Caballo Lake, along with Elephant Butte Lake State Park 20 miles upstream, offers plenty of resources for water lovers and makes its splash as one of Sierra County's top activities.
New Mexico's third largest lake lies cradled against the picturesque Caballo Mountains in Southern New Mexico and boasts 18 miles of sandy coastline. It is a perfect place for year-round boating, sailing, wind surfing, motor boating, and water skiing. Fishing is also popular, with anglers pulling in generous catches of bass and walleye.
New Mexico's largest state park also happens to sit upon New Mexico's largest lake. Spanning 24,500 acres, Elephant Butte Lake State Park's main attraction is the historical concrete dam that created the lake that gives the park its name. Engineering buffs can learn about the construction of the dam at the park's visitor center.
Those coming for the water based fun will find plenty to cheer about. Dinosaurs A-Z Visit the Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science for this fun event as they teach about each type of dinosaur (alphabetically). Each Friday a different critter is discussed and then there is a special project for the kids. The fun is from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The 45th annual Golden Aspen Motorcycle Rally is part of the 2014 AMA National Road Riding Convention held in Mescalero near Ruidoso. The event also yields seven poker runs, free food, bike contests, an 86,000-square-foot trade show, and a bike giveaway sponsored by Barnet Harley Davidson of El Paso.
Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium This western event fills the Ruidoso Downs Race Track. There will be cowboy poets, chuck wagon cooks, horsemanship demonstrations, and stick horse barrel racing for the little cowpokes. The fun begins at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Christmas Jubilee The Ruidoso Convention Center fills with Christmas cheer during this fun event to help you get a jump-start on your holiday shopping. Santa will be there for photo opportunities and to taste some of the delicious food from the food court area. The convention center opens at noon.
