The New Mexico Museum of Space History established in 1976 in Alamogordo, displays a broad collection of space flight and space age artifacts and exhibitions. Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

Open throughout the year, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is located in southern New Mexico near Alamogordo. Founded in 1980 and covering 640 acres, the park features outdoor recreation and the historic home of Oliver Lee.

Petroglyph National Monument

Stretching for seventeen miles, Petroglyph National Monument is one of the largest petroglyph sites in the United States. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the petroglyphs were created between four hundred and seven hundred years ago. Petroglyphs are shapes and symbols carved into stone in order to pass on information. The petroglyphs found at Petroglyph National Monument are believed to have been created by Native Americans and Spanish settlers who passed through the northwestern part of New Mexico.

Visitors are able to learn about the history of the petroglyphs and gain additional information about the people who created them by visiting the Vistior’s Center onsite at the monument. For a closer look at the most well-preserved petroglyphs, trails are available. Boca Negra Canyon offers three separate trails to see about one hundred different petroglyphs along their routes. Rinconada Canyon offers a single trail that is just over two miles in length with the opportunity to view up to five hundred petroglyphs. After viewing the petroglyphs firsthand, visitors can stop by the bookstore and grab additional educational materials to enhance their knowledge of Petroglyph and its cultural history.

White Sands National Monument

White Sands National Monument is a most unique monument comprised of 275 miles of fine white sand, near Alamogordo. The wind-swept gypsum dune field is the largest in the world. The area has been protected since 1933, when it was declared a national monument. Explore the dunes on the marked hiking trails or bring along a sled to have fun sledding down the dunes.

Stop by the Visitor Center in Highway 70/82, 15 miles from Alamogordo, to pick up information on ranger-led hikes. The eight-mile scenic drive into the monument is also a great way to see the dunes.
