Visiting Albuquerque & Northern New Mexico
Northern New Mexico offers a variety of festive holiday events. Among traditional events, the Moscow Ballet performs The Great Russian Nutcracker to the delight of New Mexico audiences. Join family and friends for a performance of The Nutcracker at the Farmington Civic Center on December 10th or in Albuquerque on December 11th at the Kiva Auditorium at Albuquerque Convention Center.
Santa Fe combines current holiday traditions with those of the Old West, Native Americans and Spanish for a festive and charming season of culture and celebration. Christmas Eve in the Santa Fe Plaza finds the streets and sidewalks lit with sparkling farolitos with friends and families gathered around Luminarias for warmth. Visitors flock to the Cross of the Martyrs for special views of the city.
Through Santa Fe’s winter season skiers and snow boarders make Ski Santa Fe home for great days on the slopes. Surrounded by the beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the slopes are just 16 miles from historic downtown Santa Fe. Check the calendar for one of Ski Santa Fe’s Beats on the Basin concerts – there are five outdoor concerts scheduled for the 2016-2017 season.
Have a happy holiday and get back to training. The Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon is February 15th. The 2017 Quadrathlon features biking, running, skiing and snowshoeing. Mt. Taylor is Northwest New Mexico’s highest peak with the race following a 42-miles course to the top and back down. The city of Grants, an hour west of Albuquerque, hosts the staging of the Quadrathlon.
Taos Ski Valley, and hour south of the town of Red River, hosts the 2017 Salomon Extreme Freeride Championships February 27th through March 2nd. The 2017 championships are New Mexico’s biggest ski event of the year, offering the excitement of watching top extreme skiers and snowboarders maneuvering down Taos’s steep terrain.
If traveling through New Mexico in February and March, be sure to take advantage of Restaurant Week New Mexico 2017 and sample a few of the state’s most popular restaurants. Santa Fe launches events February 24th through March 3rd followed by Taos March 3rd through March 10th. Albuquerque restaurants wrap up New Mexico Restaurant Week March 10th through March 17th offering patrons a three course Prix Fixe menu along with their regular menu.
